The Nature of Phusis

My name and work embody "Phusis" (φύσις)—an ancient Greek concept meaning "the natural way of growth" or "the inherent nature of something that emerges and transforms over time." Like this philosophical principle, I am eclectic and unpredictable, constantly evolving rather than following a linear path.

As a Washington-based artist, my deep love for nature stems from being raised in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. The lush forests, misty coastlines, and dramatic landscapes of the PNW have profoundly influenced my artistic vision and creative approach.

Throughout my creative journey, I have changed form many times, each transformation bringing new elements to my work. This ever-shifting nature is deliberate—I don't confine myself to one medium or aesthetic. My creations span crochet wearables, watchful jewelry, and mixed media wall art, each piece a reflection of my multifaceted approach to expression through art.

Materials & Sustainability

Since the age of 20, I have been collecting materials for my craft. This has left me with a diverse array of items that have various feels and textures. While not all of my work appears to be directly inspired by nature, my practice is deeply rooted in environmental ethics.

I am intent on using everything until it is completely worn out, which follows my ethical approach that serves nature rather than creating waste. Simply discarding materials doesn't solve the deeper issues of consumption and environmental impact.

I believe in transparency: not all my materials are natural yet, but my goal is to work with natural materials as much as possible moving forward, integrating them with the materials I am going through. This transition is intentional and considered, balancing the use of my existing collection with my commitment to more sustainable practices.

Each step toward wild crafting is a reconnection with ancient traditions and the earth's cycles. My goal is to eventually create solely with materials gathered from the land, honoring their origin and purpose.

Awen: The Creative Core

At the heart of my work is Awen—the flowing spirit of divine inspiration and creative energy. This ancient Celtic concept represents the spark that ignites imagination and connects us to something greater than ourselves.

My mission is to reconnect people with their inner child, for it is through this connection that we can access our creative core. The childlike wonder we once possessed naturally is the gateway to Awen—to pure creative expression unfiltered by self-doubt or limitation.

This is why whimsy is central to my work. The playful, the fantastical, the unexpected—these elements awaken that dormant childlike perspective, allowing us to see the world once again through eyes of wonder and possibility.

When you engage with my creations, you're invited to momentarily step back into that magical space where imagination flows freely and the boundaries between the mundane and the magical blur.

The Craft Philosophy

I believe in the ancient connection between humans and the natural world. My work draws inspiration from:

  • The wisdom of the Green Man, guardian of forests and wild places
  • The watchful eyes that peek from bushes and hollow trees
  • The cycles of growth, decay, and rebirth in nature
  • The whimsy and mischief of goblin folklore
  • The transformative power of handcrafting with intention

When you bring one of my creations into your life, you're inviting a piece of this wild magic into your space - a reminder of the unseen realms that exist alongside our own.
